The performance Lesbian Sunset was born out of the need to share the lesbian experience, defined by a narrative of cultural absence. How do you find and understand your identity when there are no role models or reference points? When depictions of female desire are virtually absent in culture? What does it feel like to be part of a missing piece of history — especially in a country that never had its sexual revolution, and where the first equality parade took place only in 2001?
The journey began with a cassette tape, discovered by chance by the creators at one of Warsaw’s bazaars. The pirated tapes contained fragments of a radio broadcast titled Lesbian Sunset. Everything suggests that it was an independent program created by three women, likely broadcast illegally on shortwave radio in the second half of the 20th century. Hoping to fulfill the mission of the anonymous broadcasters, the artists decided to reconstruct the contents of the archive from scraps and fragments in a search for a continuum of their identity history.
